NBA Referee Bob Delaney Steps Down from The Officiating Academy at IMG
Washington, D.C., March 10, 2008 – NBA Referee Bob Delaney announced today that he has left his off-season role as Director of The Officiating Academy at IMG Academies to focus on new projects.

“I have been training referees for the past 18 years,” Delaney said, referring to his last four years with IMG Academies in Bradenton, Florida, and 14 years prior with Coast-to-Coast Basketball Referee Development School.  “I have enjoyed every minute of it.  Helping officials of all levels become the very best they can be has been rewarding. But the time has come for me to step down.  As an NBA officiating crew chief, I’m involved in training younger referees in every game during the season.  I want to devote my efforts in the off-season to new pursuits – like speaking engagements and my book.”

Delaney’s new book Covert:  My Years Infiltrating the Mob was released last month by Union Square Press, an imprint of Sterling Publishing Co., Inc., as the lead title of its spring catalog.  Covert chronicles Delaney’s work in the mid-1970s as a New Jersey State Trooper who went deep undercover to infiltrate the mafia.  Delaney will be promoting Covert with book signings and personal appearances throughout the year. Visit www.covertbook.net for more information.

A veteran official, Delaney is in his 21st NBA season. He has worked more than 1,300 regular season games, and 120 playoff games, including eight NBA Finals games.

“I am still committed to referee education,” Delaney said. “I will continue to speak at programs run by other NBA officials and additional sports programs on leadership and teamwork.”
